Out of School, out of Mind: What Happens to Children Who Spend Long Periods Away from Formal Education

It is recognised that getting a good education is one of the most important determinants of a child's future, but missing at least some education remains a common occurrence for many children and young people in the United Kingdom. Over recent years, education has been placed high on the political agenda in the UK. Among other things, a wide range of initiatives have been introduced to prevent children and young people missing substantial periods of their education. In response to this issue and after discussions with a number of government and non-governmental organisations, Save the Children UK decided to undertake an exploratory piece of research looking at the experiences and perceptions of young people who miss substantial periods of their education. The findings of this research are discussed in this paper.
