Teenagers' bedrooms are reflections of their personalities. Their bedrooms showcase their individuality and define the world as they see it. Their bedrooms are private and public--shared with some and off limits to others. Each day students wake up and begin the rituals of the day, and in the evening they return to their sanctuaries and close the door. What if they never returned to their bedrooms? What would these rooms tell about them? In this article, the author describes an assignment inspired by a slideshow on the "New York Times" website titled "The Shrine Down the Hall," in which photographer Ashley Gilbertson documented the untouched bedrooms of nineteen young men and women who died while serving in Iraq. Mr. Gilbertson looked at bedrooms as a way of memorializing the lives, rather than the deaths, of young service members. (Contains 2 online resources.)
