Hydroponics is a process in which plants are grown using nutrient-rich water instead of soil. Because this process maximizes the use of water and nutrients--providing only what the plant uses in controlled and easily maintained systems--it is a viable alternative to traditional farming methods. The amount of control in these systems also ensures that crops are contaminant free, which helps stem outbreaks of "E. coli and Salmonella". This article describes a long-term, inquiry-based experience that introduces high school biology students to hydroponics and sustainability through the work of NASA biologists. Students build and grow their own hydroponics systems--allowing for a truly hands-on experience. (Contains 1 figure.)
