The Contemporary Curriculum
Klenow, Trish
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v111 n3 p17-19 Nov 2011
The best way to combat apathy in art class is through authentic art education. Authentic art education involves making meaningful connections with students. Students are motivated by their environment, their peers, and their media. Sometimes this means eschewing the canon of old masters in art education and embracing more current trends. The author began incorporating images and artists from "Juxtapoz" magazine into her curriculum four years ago. "Juxtapoz" is a magazine of contemporary art, media, and culture. The publication showcases a lot of Pop Surrealism and art commonly referred to as "low brow." The artists featured in "Juxtapoz" represent every race, gender, and background. An added bonus of teaching this material is that the teacher gets to learn a whole new genre/artist's style/method. (Contains 1 online resource.)
