A Learning Odyssey: Artistic Collaboration around a Greek Myth
Gokce, Diana Kodner; O'Brien, Dana; Wilson, Lizanne
Schools: Studies in Education, v9 n2 p147-159 Fall 2012
In the fall of 2010 the faculty of Baker Demonstration School began a yearlong exploration of the question "How do we know what children know?" At that time, three teacher colleagues already had entered upon a collaborative project integrating music and drama with a unit of study in the second and third grades. They decided to carefully and thoroughly observe and document what children came to know through the unit, and they formed two essential questions reliant on this information: Was such an endeavor worthwhile in terms of actual outcomes for children? If so, What key elements were needed for the success of similar future projects? They found that a flexible collaboration with the children was highly effective in eliciting higher-order thinking, manifested not only in classroom discussions but also in graphic, kinesthetic, affective, and musical expressions.
