Leading in the Community by Making Connections
Johnson, Steven D.
School Business Affairs, v78 n6 p8-10 Jun 2012
Bashing public schools seems to be in vogue these days. Admittedly, some of the bashing is well deserved: inappropriate teacher-student relationships, cheating on standardized tests, embezzlement, and other illegal acts. The reality is that education is a people business and when an individual deals with as many people as educators and administrators do in their districts, there will be mistakes, problems, and even illegal activity. And as often happens, when a few people mess up, the majority are called on to defend their own actions and are held even more accountable. Yet, these problems have to do with connecting with and being a leader in the community. By connecting to the community, administrators or educators establish relationships, which in turn establish trust. That trust is critical not only during levy and bond elections but throughout the year when any number of issues arise. If the community members trust the district leaders to do the right thing, they are more inclined not only to support the school district but to defend it. The author asserts that an open, honest relationship with the community will go a long way in establishing support.
