Parents, Teachers Tout Classroom Councils to Boost Engagement
Harris, Rebecca
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v77 n7 p29-30 Mar 2012
A local Early Head Start parent recently traveled to Washington, DC, to share a new parent engagement strategy with White House officials. Nastassia Jackson and her children's teachers hope the time is ripe for the idea to catch on. Their pitch: A parent board, like a miniature local school council, that "administrates alongside the teachers" and gives family members the final say about what happens in each classroom. The "Classroom Vision Council" was the brainchild of Sherrell Carr, an assistant teacher at the Educare Center. The goal was simple: to bridge the gap between parents and the teaching staff. The council planned family science and math activities in the classroom, which parents were expected to attend, as well as family field trips. All of the classroom's parents are considered members of the council; they are represented by a teacher-appointed board, which consists of a chair, a vice-chair, and a secretary. The teachers and the board co-administer the class with twice-a-month meetings, and seek feedback from the rest of the parents as necessary. Because of the council activities, the classroom received more parent volunteer hours than any of the center's other rooms. The council fits well with the center's focus on parent-child interaction, parent mastery, and parent advocacy. And the skills parents use in classroom advocacy and leadership are the same ones they need in parenting.
