Enhancing Peer Feedback and Speech Preparation: The Speech Video Activity
Opt, Susan
Communication Teacher, v26 n4 p224-227 2012
In the typical public speaking course, instructors or assistants videotape or digitally record at least one of the term's speeches in class or lab to offer students additional presentation feedback. Students often watch and self-critique their speeches on their own. Peers often give only written feedback on classroom presentations or completed videos. This article describes a speech video activity which expands peer feedback and participation by having students work in small groups to digitally record their informative speeches for later classroom presentation. Students watch themselves present several times--in video "drafts" and in class. Group members provide feedback on each others' "drafts" before the class presentation. Because students record their speeches outside the classroom or lab for this activity, they can be more creative in topic choices and give speeches in environments related to their topics. The speech video activity creates the possibility for students to make speech videos to share with Internet audiences.
