Investigating Black Gay Male Undergraduates' Experiences in Campus Residence Halls
Strayhorn, Terrell L.; Mullins, Taris G.
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v39 n1 p140-161 2012
This qualitative study sought to understand the challenges that Black gay male undergraduates confront in campus residence halls and the supports that enabled their success in facing them. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 29 participants, we found that Black gay men report varied encounters with subtle and overt forms of racism among White peers, homophobia among same-race male peers, and residence hall policies and programs that perpetuate heterosexism, homophobia, and isolation. Several sources of support and recommendations for improving educational practice are highlighted. (Contains 1 table and 1 footnote.)
