Managing Boundaries in the Web 2.0 Classroom
McEwan, Bree
New Directions for Teaching and Learning, n131 p15-28 Fall 2012
This chapter explores the use of social media in the higher education classroom highlighting potential issues for student-faculty boundary management and providing suggestions for praxis. Social media has captured the attention of educators and provides exciting new ways to engage students in course material. However, instructors and students alike must exercise caution in renegotiating the boundaries of the professional faculty-student relationship or risk creating uncomfortable situations that are not conducive to learning. By taking care to understand the goals of different types of social media and utilizing spaces that allow students and instructors to achieve learning objectives while maintaining appropriate boundaries, faculty members may be able to open up new lines of communication and engage in innovative pedagogy.
