Students' Rights and a Response to Legislation
Aiello, Rocco
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v83 n3 p29-31 Mar 2012
This is a very special year; it is a Paralympic year featuring the 2012 London Paralympics. So why should teachers consider including disability sport, especially Paralympic sport, in the general physical education (GPE) curriculum? Because students with and without disabilities could benefit from such a curriculum model, and physical education programs across the United States would be working to address the rights of all students related to sport opportunities. Every student has the right to participate in sports and physical education as part of their school experience. Sports, along with physical activity, encompass more than just the benefit of being physically active; they promote good health, increase one's self-esteem, improve mental alertness, create independence, boost self-confidence, and increase socialization skills. Sports are especially important for individuals with disabilities. Having an opportunity to participate in U.S. Paralympic sports in schools and in the community can lead students with disabilities to further aspire to athletic competition, thereby promoting the chances of finding the next generation of Paralympians.
