It can be difficult to connect with parents of students in upper elementary grades, because as they get older, students generally seek independence and do not want their parents involved as much as they have been in their younger years. Teachers must work at finding a way to reach out to parents. The author started parent science nights so she could communicate with the families of her students. These nights give the parents a chance to meet her and personalize the learning experience their children are having in the science classroom. After this experience, the parents feel more confident in notifying her about issues. It is also gratifying to watch parents work as partners with their children and enjoy the night together. Best of all, parent science nights provide time to present exciting challenges and problem-solving situations that are not easily incorporated into a regular classroom schedule.
