Demystifying the IEP Process for Diverse Parents of Children with Disabilities
Lo, Lusa
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v44 n3 p14-20 Jan-Feb 2012
The complicated individualized education program (IEP) process and annual team meetings can be very stressful for families of children with disabilities, especially for those whose primary language is not English and those who are unfamiliar with the American special education system. Cultural and language barriers and lack of information regarding the IEP process continue to prevent these families from being active participants in IEP meetings. Specific suggestions regarding how to demystify such process are offered to practitioners who may be working with the growing culturally and linguistically diverse population in this country.
