Gifted Kids, Social Issues, and the Works of Dr. Seuss
Granada, Jim
Understanding Our Gifted, v17 n2 p11-13 Win 2005
Gifted students often share a sense of justice and a concern for the welfare of mankind and the planet. This humanitarian feeling may sometimes be overlooked, given today's academic focus. The author has taken an in-depth look at the works of Theodor Geisel, popularly known as Dr. Seuss, and moved beyond his whimsical illustrations and wordplay to examine the themes embedded in many of his works. Many of these themes, both obvious and subtle, can provide vehicles for discussion and exploration of issues that some children will take to much higher levels. The themes often address their sense of justice. Theodor Geisel has provided a wealth of material to use with kids, including the exploration of the subtle complexities of many of his works. It's refreshing that educators and parents have these books to help kids understand the world with its issues and complexities.
