The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) was developed for students between the ages of 3 and 12 years. It is a transdisciplinary program designed to foster the development of the whole child, not just in the classroom but also through other means of learning. The IBPYP focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds, and encompassing social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs in addition to academic welfare. IBPYP schools believe that learning begins with the students' prior knowledge and that each student will be able to engage with the curriculum through a range of learning experiences. Therefore, IBPYP classrooms are differentiated environments with teachers planning according to the needs of the individual students. While the IBPYP was created as a broad, inclusive program, it is still well able to meet the needs of the gifted learner. What should curricula for the highly able learner look like? This article discusses what should be included in the development of a differentiated curriculum for the gifted.
