Enhancing Relationships with Parents of English Language Learners
Delgado, Rocio; Huerta, Mary Esther; Campos, David
Principal Leadership, v12 n6 p30-34 Feb 2012
Schools provide the context in which the interests of all the stakeholders in a child's education intersect to sustain academic achievement. Strong home, school, and community partnerships are integral to the ability of English language learners (ELLs) to access learning opportunities, and parental involvement is particularly important to their academic achievement and linguistic development. Parental involvement encompasses different dimensions, including nature, degree, and frequency of participation. Establishing mutual academic goals with the parents of ELLs can enhance the exchange of student information and contribute to students' social, emotional, and academic growth. Each learning environment, school and home, contributes unique learning opportunities. Working collaboratively with parents advances their children's achievement when formal learning is linked to prior knowledge and generalized to real-world experiences. Many Latino parents are reluctant to become involved in their children's education because they are concerned about their own language and academic skills. Teachers can help build positive relationships with parents by learning about their cultural backgrounds and connecting the home and school environments.
