Due to the invisible nature of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) undergraduate population, it is difficult for student affairs professionals at community colleges to identify and address the needs of sexual minority students on campus. Given the lack of literature regarding LGBTQ students at community colleges, student affairs professionals must rely on a body of knowledge generated primarily from research at four-year institutions. The topics covered in this article are written primarily for student personnel staff working in community college settings. Therefore, the noncurricular needs of LGBTQ students are emphasized rather than pedagogical and classroom issues facing this population. The topics addressed should also interest those working at other commuter campuses such as nonresidential colleges and private technical colleges. This article addresses the current state of research involving LGBTQ students at community colleges. In addition, obstacles to identifying sexual minorities on campus are also discussed.
