"Playground Pals" and Peer Mediation at Benarty Primary School, Scotland
Gallacher, Karen
International Journal on School Disaffection, v8 n2 p42-43 2011
Benarty Primary School is situated in Lochore, Fife, Scotland. The school is proactive in developing self regulation; restorative and nurturing approaches. It aims to build resilience in all of its children, staff and families. Playground Pals have been established at Benarty Primary School since 2009 and as part of that programme, there have been regular meetings and workshops. Playground Pals are children who volunteer, are interviewed and trained to encourage a happy and positive playground (school yard). Playground pals encourage friendship, games and some also act as peer mediators to help the students deal with any problems. In this article, the author discusses the best/worst bits of being a playground pal. She also discusses the peer mediation programme.
