Outward Bound's 48 years of programming in the United States has led to a rich history of experiential education research. The exhibition of current Outward Bound research at the Symposium on Experiential Education (SEER) is exciting, as it represents a resurgence of academic investment in one of the oldest experiential education organizations in the country. The three papers in Session I present a diverse view of research on Outward Bound, including (a) a look into the impact of the Final Expedition, (b) a comparison of Outward Bound and National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) student experiences, and (c) an investigation of courses designed for military veterans. As the discussant for Session I, the author has considered the individual merits and implications of each study, as well as potential impacts for programming and further research.
