Point 19--SERVICE: Expanding the Conceptual Basis of the WEA Curriculum
Coates, Tom
Journal of the Wilderness Education Association, v17 n3 p9 Win 2005
The Wilderness Education Association's (WEA) 18-Point Curriculum emphasizes experiential teaching and learning and is based on a central belief that wilderness education and outdoor leadership are essential in order to elevate preservation in the minds of students and future leaders, help develop a land ethic congruent with the ideals of the Wilderness Act, and establish wilderness education and outdoor leadership as a legitimate academic and professional field of study. As the conceptual basis of all WEA courses, this 18-Point Curriculum identifies major skills and knowledge areas essential for qualified outdoor leaders. The potential for incorporating service into WEA courses currently exists in the 18-Point Curriculum through its emphasis on experiential education. Service-learning experiences could be initiated as ways of achieving objectives of various parts of the 18-Point Curriculum while developing a sense of stewardship and an awareness of the value of service on the part of course participants. Adding service to the WEA curriculum would be the next step toward a more socially responsible use of the outdoor environment.
