Early Childhood Education Assembly: Changing the Face of Early Literacy Education within NCTE and Beyond
Souto-Manning, Mariana; Vasquez, Vivian M.
English Journal, v101 n1 p123-125 Sep 2011
Literacy begins at birth. As soon as children are born, they start reading the world around them. Yet for years the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) was not regarded as a place for early childhood teachers, researchers, and teacher educators who work with children from birth to age eight. Recently, however, a group has come together to begin negotiating a place for early childhood educators within NCTE. This article discusses how early childhood educators established NCTE's Early Childhood Education Assembly to support literacy work with young children. (Contains 1 figure.)
