Is the Infrastructure of EHDI Programs Working?
Houston, K. Todd; Hoffman, Jeff; Munoz, Karen F.; Bradham, Tamala S.
Volta Review, v111 n2 p225-242 Sum 2011
State coordinators of early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) programs completed a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, or SWOT, analysis that consisted of 12 evaluative areas of EHDI programs. For the EHDI program infrastructure area, 47 coordinators responded with a total of 292 items, and themes were identified in each category. A threats, opportunities, weaknesses, and strengths, or TOWS, analysis yielded 12 recommendations that focused on similar themes. Out of these 12 recommendations, 3 distinct strategies emerged: 1) continue utilizing the EHDI advisory committee to establish and expand collaborative agreements with key stakeholders; 2) maximize funding opportunities from state and local sources; and 3) raise public awareness about the purpose and importance of newborn hearing screening, early diagnosis, and early intervention for children with hearing loss. Addressed appropriately, these recommendations can strengthen the infrastructure of state EHDI programs. (Contains 6 tables.)
