Scottish Kindergarten, Part 1
Keeler, Rusty
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n202 p65-67 Nov-Dec 2011
What's the best way of connecting children with nature? Let them go outside, of course! Let them dig in dirt and splash in puddles. If children have access to an outdoor space and the proper clothing, there is no better place to discover the wonders and fun of nature than in one's own backyard. Every herb garden, shade tree, and sand pit gives children an up-close and personal connection to the beauty and mystery of the natural world. Last summer, the author travelled to Scotland to visit Claire Warden of Mindstretchers, Ltd. and spent three days at the kindergartens and tagged along with the kids. They spend nearly all day outside. The play is rich, complex, cooperative, and ever-evolving and changing throughout the seasons. By creating a natural space and letting the children naturally play, a teacher will realize that children are not just connecting to nature. They are connected.
