The issue of how to increase the engagement level of English language learners is daunting, but viable solutions can be achieved if a discussion is started. In schools across California, and all of America, school stakeholders are struggling to articulate ways to ensure that all of the ELLs in their schools are successful. In this article, the author shares how her school modified teachers' instructions to best service the needs of their pupils. When the school focused on quality teaching, standards-based learning and best use of academic time, growth for English language learners soared.
