In response to the question "Whither scholarship in the work of enhancing the quality of teaching and learning?" everyone must begin by thinking about the importance of understanding the teaching and learning process because this is at the core of what we do as educators. The author believes that it is through the research they conduct on teaching and learning that teacher educators can make visible important aspects and dimensions of teachers' learning and ultimately come to consider the results of their work as "researcher educators." To enhance the quality of teaching, everyone needs to understand teacher learning at its deepest level and continue to build a culture of inquiry about knowledge development in teachers. She hopes the dialogue begun in this volume will stimulate discussion among teacher educators and faculties of education schools, educators at all phases of their careers, and the students in their classes about what they can do to continually improve the quality of teaching in our nation's schools. As educational professionals, they need to foster research that will inform their curricular and pedagogical decisions and ultimately help to define the best approaches that enhance the quality of teaching and learning. Research should inform deeper understandings about what teachers need and how they best learn. The world is changing, and the scholarship of teaching and learning made visible through research is a positive and important step in moving their field of education forward in its goal of meeting the needs of all learners.
