Biophilic Design Aesthetics in Art and Design Education
Joye, Yannick
Journal of Aesthetic Education, v45 n2 p17-35 Sum 2011
In essence, biophilic design acknowledges urban living as a reality but proposes to integrate nature and natural forms into the built environment, with the goal of inducing biophilic responses and thereby fostering human well-being. The central goal of this paper is to highlight the possibilities of and challenges for biophilic design and discuss its relevance--and the "natural" aesthetics that goes hand in hand with it--for art and design education. In the first section, the author will explain the basic design principles of biophilic design. In the second part, he will try to demonstrate that biophilic design education is crucial for progressing to a mature biophilic design "practice." The third part will argue that biophilic design education transcends the strict pedagogical level and will show that this type of education can have a creative, ecological, and restorative significance for those involved in it. The closing sections philosophically discuss the implications of biophilic design's "genetic" commitments. (Contains 1 figure and 45 notes.)
