This article summarizes Section I, "Historical and Conceptual Foundations," of the 2007 "Handbook of Distance Education" (Moore 2007a). Of the eight chapters, two are dedicated to historical perspectives of distance education. Another is centered on research. Five other chapters are focused on distance education theory/theorists.
