Gaining Empowerment Allows Results [G.E.A.R.]
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v20 n3 p17-20 2011
Gaining Empowerment Allows Results (G.E.A.R.) is a parent-run organization for families facing challenges due to children with emotional and behavioral health concerns. These parents are able to network with other families and learn about resources for their family. A wide range of services include telephone support, monthly family support groups, and workshops on topics related to emotional and behavioral health. The guiding philosophy of G.E.A.R. is to help parents affect decisions based on the strengths and needs of their child and family. G.E.A.R. also teaches leadership skills to prepare parents as advocates for developing systems of care that help children, youth, and families function better at home, in school, in their community, and throughout life. Through parent-to-parent sharing of experiences and knowledge, the G.E.A.R. Parent Network empowers families to better meet their children's needs. This article shares wisdom gained by families who are advocating for their special needs children.
