From Primary to Secondary

This author discusses her decision to move to secondary school to teach mathematics, after having taught and been a mathematics manager in primary schools for six years. She states that this was a valuable experience and sparked her interest in the transition experiences of students, particularly in mathematics. Research (Evangelou et al, 2008, p20) about transition in general shows that students are anxious about transition to secondary school, in particular leaving behind old friends and teachers, getting bullied, getting lost in a larger school and the amount of homework. Students looked forward, however, to having more freedom and being treated like a "grown up." Interestingly, students were pleased to have specialist teachers for each subject as they felt they would be taught better.
