Understanding Parent Decision Making for Treatment of ADHD
Mills, Ida
School Social Work Journal, v36 n1 p41-60 Sep 2011
School social workers are regularly in a position of information sharing and treatment planning with parents whose child has attention difficulties. A better understanding by the social worker of a parent's experience can lead to improved communication, strengthened relationships and trust, and improved treatment planning. This qualitative study examined the experiences and decision-making processes of nineteen families as they considered medication as a treatment option for their child with a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study compared the beliefs, feelings, and experiences of parents choosing to medicate the condition of ADHD to those who chose not to medicate. No significant differences between the decision-making processes of parents in the different groups were found.
