An Empirical Test of Legitimation as a Status Process
Shelly, Ann Converse; Shelly, Robert K.
Current Research in Social Psychology, v17 n3 p19-28 Sep 2011
Legitimation includes authorization of position occupants by external authority figures or their endorsement by members of task groups. Endorsed authority figures are more likely to direct interaction and influence the actions of group members than authorized authority figures. Interaction dynamics that lead to legitimation in groups are explored in this paper. We examine transcripts to determine whether speeches that contain organizing content vary by the history of the group and its gender composition. (Contains 4 tables.)
