Teaching about Motherhood: Revisioning Family

Motherhood is both an important topic and a challenge to teach. Pregnancy, childbirth, and the transition to motherhood are significant life experiences for most women, important choices for all women, and major events in the lives of most men. At the same time, they are topics about which everyone thinks they know a good deal. The complexity of teaching about motherhood has led many who teach Psychology of Women to focus more on teaching women and men to expect and accept women in the world of work than to rethink the organization of parenthood and family life. In this article, the author approaches the topic by first indicating that, although individuals think of the biological aspects of reproduction as unchanging, in fact science and technology have changed them. She stresses the need to consider conception, pregnancy, and motherhood as socially constructed. She shares how she teaches about pregnancy, childbirth, and the transition to motherhood within the framework of informed choice.
