Management in Education, v25 n4 p146-148 Oct 2011
In this article, the author presents his study of parent participation at an international school in Spain offering the British curriculum. He used quantitative methods and administered questionnaires to gather data that reflected the views of a large proportion of the school's parent community. He administered semi-structured interviews to gain a deeper understanding of parents' views and opinions of documents that he felt might have influenced parents in some way, including the school website, curriculum advice and the school prospectus. One hundred and twenty parents were questioned with a 37 per cent response rate. The questionnaires and the structured interviews revealed some important inconsistencies and parental opinion. There appeared to be a lack of clarity about the school's direction, mission and educational objectives. Parents felt there was a lack of consultation and 75 per cent of parents felt unclear about the nature of a UK education. Documents were regarded as sparse, vague and only in English, though 80 per cent of parents were unable to comprehend written English. Early indications point to relative success. The important thing now is to maintain the momentum via a continued commitment to the pledges made by the board and the head. Regular reviews and necessary changes that reflect the changing needs of the school and parent community will be vital for long-term success. (Contains 3 figures.)
