Teaching the Combined Gas Law

For students to develop an understanding of science content and processes, teachers must create classroom environments in which students use inquiry to understand the natural world. However, teachers frequently find it difficult, if not impossible, to demonstrate complex scientific concepts, which textbooks often fail to properly explain. During the planning process of their lesson on gas laws, the authors read multiple chemistry and weather textbooks on the subject. In doing so, they realized that most texts introduced Boyle's and Charles's laws before the combined gas law. Initially, they decided to teach either Boyle's or Charles's law before the combined gas law, because this is how the chemistry textbooks that they reviewed had sequenced the information. Yet, as they began to think about how to teach the law to their class, they realized that they would need extremely controlled conditions and expensive scientific equipment. They decided that instead of teaching Boyle's and Charles's laws as separate entities, they should teach the combined gas law. They believe this is the best pedagogical approach because the combined gas law occurs more often in the real world, and, therefore, students are more likely to have prior knowledge and experiences that deal with such phenomena. This article presents a lesson that aids students in understanding the relationship among temperature, pressure, and volume of gas in an enclosed container. (Contains 1 resource.)
