Computation of Capacitors in Complex Arrangements
Rizhov, Alexander
Physics Education, v46 n5 p551-553 Sep 2011
There is a remarkable difference between formal knowledge and true understanding of the subject. While the former helps students earn top grades, the latter is crucial to the solution of real-world problems. An excellent example is the computation of capacitance, with which some students have difficulty. Also, most textbooks limit problem analysis to two simple types: capacitors arranged in series and in parallel connections. This is insufficient for the solution of problems incorporating complex layout of capacitors, because these cannot always be easily reduced to simple textbook cases. This paper introduces a generic method for computation of capacitance parameters, regardless of circuit layout. (Contains 7 figures.)
