Little Fish in a Big Pond--Time to Get Schooled!

One technique used by many who fish is to catch a fish in a creek or pond and then release it in a different pond. This satisfies the desire for sport, and it also serves to stock a pond that may need replenishment. Of course this restocking can be a traumatic experience for the new fish. To survive in the new environment, the fish must find its place in the new surroundings and way of life. The new fish must find its own niche in the big pond if it is to survive and, hopefully, thrive. Surviving and thriving is necessary if the pond is to continue producing and developing younger fish. This analogy is similar to events that humans experience when entering into a new area. This article describes a potentially serious situation in the technology and engineering education profession and offers recommendations. Many technology and engineering leaders have led the profession for years but are now entering the graying stage of life. The author identifies some of the "big fish" that have had an impact on what people in the technology and engineering fields do every day. The author suggests that they must learn how to swim quickly and efficiently in order to ensure the future of the pond and all of the life it supports.
