The Math Wizard in Oz
Christy, Donna; Lambe, Karen; Payson, Christine; Carnevale, Patricia
Teaching Children Mathematics, v18 n1 p22-31 Aug 2011
The crucial need for a mathematically literate society, coupled with a sustained focus on mathematics standards, continues its center-stage presence. At the same time, "Principles and Standards" states that it is imperative to offer "all students high-quality programs that include significant mathematics presented in a manner that respects both the mathematics and the nature of young children." To this end, the authors developed a public program based on "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Their version, The Math Wizard in Oz, integrates a classic fantasy that children of all ages love with Standards-based mathematics activities that can easily be implemented in a classroom, an after-school program, or during a schoolwide family math program. The Math Wizard in Oz encompasses twenty-four activities among six stations: Kansas (K), Munchkin Land (ML), Yellow Brick Road (YBR), Emerald City (EC), Haunted Forest (HF), and Witch's Castle (WC). Teachers can adapt this program for a family mathematics event, or they can use any of the activities in the classroom. (Contains 3 figures.)
