Approaching Educational Research from the Tradition of Critical-Constructive Didaktik
Hudson, Brian
Pedagogy, Culture and Society, v11 n2 p173-187 2003
This article takes as its starting point discussions on the nature of critical educational research. It seeks to highlight some potential pitfalls for the less experienced researcher entering the field for the first time. It also highlights the tension between the more mechanistic approaches involving categorisation and tendencies that are evident within the English-language literature, and the more integrative and holistic approaches within the tradition of Didaktik. In particular it seeks to illuminate the ways in which the tradition of critical-constructive Didaktik offers a highly developed rationale for paying attention to the "search for meaning" through a strong hermeneutic and interpretative emphasis. Furthermore, it seeks to highlight an approach that facilitates the "holding of the complexity" through the idea of "constructive method synthesis", and also offers a critical dimension to the practice of educational research through social analysis and ideology.
