Where Teaching and Learning Come Alive: Greening the Curriculum at Head-Royce School
Bennett, Lisa
Independent School, v70 n1 Fall 2010
Seemingly small things can lead to big changes in a school, when the moment is right and the community is willing. But changes that ultimately cut across all disciplines and grades are truly remarkable, especially when they take place in an institution founded when Grover Cleveland was president. In this article, the author discusses how Head-Royce School, a K-12 independent school in Oakland, California, has committed itself to greening its entire curriculum. The school's green mission comprises four goals: (1) Create a healthy environment; (2) Use resources in a sustainable way; (3) Develop an education program; and (4) Pursue a nutritional health program.
