The PUPPETS Project Hits WA
Belohlawek, Julie; Keogh, Brenda; Naylor, Stuart
Teaching Science, v56 n1 p36-38 Mar 2010
"The Puppets Promoting Engagement and Talk in Science" project focuses on using puppets to engage children in conversation to develop their thinking about scientific concepts in an inquiring, explorative approach. This project is also about motivating and engaging teachers to link literacy with science in their teaching and learning practices. This project is based on the very successful and well-researched UK PUPPETS Project by Brenda Keogh, Stuart Naylor, Shirley Simon, Brigid Downing and Jane Maloney. In WA this rich and practical research of the UK PUPPETS project was shared with teachers through the "The Puppets Promoting Engagement and Talk in Science" project. This project consisted of professional learning opportunities and the provision of sets of the UK puppets and associated resources to each education district in WA. The UK puppets and associated resources, including a CD-ROM (containing a site licence) with animated stories, teacher resource book, story books and laminated investigation poster, were provided to teachers to embed the project in their classrooms. These resources were designed for teachers to use in schools within each of the districts to engage children in conversation to develop their thinking about scientific concepts, and ultimately to improve student achievement in Science.
