ZERO TO THREE's Model of Leadership Development: Knowing and Doing in the Context of Relationships

Despite the need for leadership in the infant-family field, few professionals who work with, study, develop policies for, or advocate for young children and their families have opportunities to develop leadership skills because developing leadership is not usually a focus of regular academic preparation, on-the-job-training, and professional development activities. This article describes ZERO TO THREE's recent evaluation of its efforts to address leadership in the infant-family field over a period of almost 25 years. Evaluators analyzed the experiences of the 200+ participants in ZERO TO THREE's leadership programs from 1981-2003. ZERO TO THREE's Leadership Model involves a relationship-based collaborative process whereby individuals or groups, informed by boundary-spanning knowledge, act to bring about positive change in the lives of young children and their families.
