The Awakening of Relationships as a Baby Joins a Family: Observations and Reflections
Wightman, Barbara; Weatherston, Deborah
Zero to Three (J), v24 n3 p30-37 Jan 2004
This article illustrates how observation can help one learn about the importance of observation, the development of relationships, and how a baby becomes part of a family. Author Barbara Wightman observed the evolving relationships in a new family for 1 hour every other week beginning in the last months of pregnancy through the first 4 months of the baby's life. Reflecting on the personal memories aroused by time spent with new parents and their baby was also part of the infant observation experience. Wightman shares excerpts from her observation journal, and Weatherston, her supervisor and an infant mental health specialist, responds to the observations and to the observer's thoughts and feelings. Both supervisor and observer, by integrating their individual reflections and engaging in a rich, deep dialogue, created new meaning as they watched the awakening of new relationships. The observation and reflection transformed the observer's understanding of early development within the context of emotion and relationship.
