The Multiplier Effect: The Case for Multi-School, Global Education Programs

Multi-school and multi-country programs greatly enhance leadership development and global awareness in students and teachers, while creating better problem solvers, stronger relationships, and wider community impact than any single-school program. That's why Global Youth Leadership Institute (GYLI) and National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) are working together on summer programs such as Institute for Student Leaders (ISL). Both on-site and through the Leader Learning Plans, ISL supports the missions of independent schools by creating a student-teacher collaborative learning experience that develops essential skills--especially collaborative problem-solving skills combined with a global perspective. NAIS first developed the ISL to complement the partnership work of students in its Challenge 20/20 program, by enabling the students to collaborate in person. The first ISL event took place in Boston in 2006 as an extension of the NAIS Annual Conference. Now it is a thematic, 10-day program in a select country. NAIS decided to rotate the institute to different countries in order to allow students to "multiply" their ideas in new and different parts of the world. One constant in the program is the approach: time spent working in small, diverse groups, analyzing and articulating pertinent skills necessary for global leadership. One consistent connection is a shared desire for change. Multi-school and multi-perspective opportunities for students and teachers are necessary for the highest forms of problem solving, leadership, and learning.
