Sharland, Hannah
Primary Science, n118 p15-17 May-Jun 2011
The author believes that to truly engage children in learning, an imaginative approach with purposeful activities is very important. One way that this can be implemented is through simple "engineering projects" where science, design and technology (D&T), mathematics and information and communication technology (ICT) are combined, allowing children to carry the process through from design and construction to testing. This promotes enthusiasm by creating a sense of ownership as well as developing essential teamwork and communication skills. In this article the author shows how to combine science, design and technology, mathematics and ICT creatively, through on-screen modelling and use of a "Roamer," a programmable floor robot. (Contains 4 figures and 5 online resources.)
