What "Saving" Languages Might Tell Us about "Teaching" Them
Lo Bianco, Joseph
Babel, v45 n2-3 p41-50 2011
This paper makes a link between two activities in which the author is engaged, i.e. between work on "saving" languages and work on "teaching" languages. Since it is an invited address, the Keith Horwood Memorial Lecture, the author begins by making further, and chronologically prior, to Keith Horwood. Then he addresses three themes of the conference: (1) "discourse"; (2) "dialogue"; and (3) "diversity." He discusses the connection between the activity of "saving" languages and the activity of "teaching" languages which can be informed by reflections on dynamic views of identity. He presents examples of three young people whose views and behaviours reveal important ideas and connections between the domains of "saving' languages and work on "teaching" and learning languages.
