Creative Space
Bianchi, Lynne
Primary Science Review, n90 p15-18 Nov-Dec 2005
Creative Partnerships in Education UK (CAPE), funded by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA), worked with the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University and The Centre for the Understanding of the Built Environment (CUBE) to devise and manage this project in 10 primary and secondary schools in Leeds and Manchester. In March 2003, teachers, together with artists, museum curators, scientists and research students, formed long-term "creative space teams" to investigate National Curriculum science concepts in new and creative ways. Teams, which each included at least one teacher, two practitioners in the creative arts and a PhD science research student, worked across a secondary school and link primary school for over a year. Activities covered many areas, including plants, habitats, electricity, microorganisms, sound, light and forces, and placed emphasis on questioning, observation and investigation. The project fitted well with the aims of National Curriculum Sc1, "Scientific enquiry." The following recommendations, addressed to teachers, schools, local education authorities and policy-makers, are made: (1) Enhance teacher confidence; (2) Remodel the curriculum; (3) Encourage cross-curricular partnerships; (4) Make the use of external experts or their practice routine; and (5) Influence initial teacher training.
