The History All around Us: Roosevelt High School and the 1968 Eastside Blowouts
Gibbs, Brian C.
Rethinking Schools, v25 n2 p44-48 Win 2010-2011
A text can be anything: a poem, a map, an old letter. To spur great learning, it needs to be provocative, powerful, open to multiple interpretations, and, above all, it needs to teach something profound. A school building can also become text when a teacher uses place as a way to make history come alive. The author discusses how he uses Theodore Roosevelt High School in East Los Angeles and turns the school into a full-fledged text. He also discusses how he developed a lesson that began with the 1968 Eastside Blowouts.
