Supporting In-School Opportunities for Professional Development
Bishop, Keith; Feasey, Rosemary
Primary Science Review, n95 p37-38 Nov-Dec 2006
The AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust (AZSTT) was created as a registered charity in 1997 with a mission to support the teaching of science in primary schools in the UK. Since 1997, the Trust has commissioned, and is continuing to commission, a broad spectrum of large-scale innovative projects and smaller scale cluster projects designed to develop and enhance the practice of teaching primary science. Although hundreds of primary teachers across the UK have now become involved in these projects and experienced new ideas or new approaches to primary science, the Trust recognises it cannot possibly reach everyone who teaches science. Consequently, it has invested heavily in the professional development of primary teachers. So far, twelve different continuing professional development (CPD) units have been created, each designed to be viewed on Trust's website, or in an equivalent "PowerPoint" form. The authors describe these innovative approaches to the professional development of teachers of primary science. (Contains 3 online resources.)
