You Cannot Talk to Disease!
Fiery, Randy
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v19 n4 p36-40 2011
In work with troubled children, it is important to distinguish between emotional problems that are social in origin and those of a biological or medical nature. Over the past 50 years, many mental health professionals have come to believe that these problems are primarily biological and thus should be treated pharmaceutically. This disease model has led to exponential increases in the use of psychotropic medications with children. The overuse of drug treatment for children in conflict contradicts a half century of experience and evidence on the power of relationship-based ecological approaches of re-education. In this article, the author illustrates Re-ED in action as an antidote to disease models.
