Authentic Interdisciplinary Instruction: Raising the Bar
Mohnsen, Bonnie
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v24 n3 p18-20 Jan-Feb 2011
This article addressed the need for authentic interdisciplinary instruction. Authentic interdisciplinary instruction is defined as a learning activity that simultaneously improves student performance related to grade-level standards in two or more disciplines (e.g., science and physical education). The process described for creating authentic interdisciplinary lessons included: (1) get a list of grade level standards from all disciplines; (2) compare the list of standards to the physical education standards at the same grade level; (3) look for related standards (commonalities) from two or more disciplines; and (4) create interdisciplinary lessons that address these standards. Interdisciplinary instruction can help teachers provide students with an enjoyable, rich, and motivational learning environment (Leppo & Davis, 2005).
